COUNSELING FAQs

Q: What's the difference between creative arts therapy and talk therapy?

A: The use of creative arts therapy (arts-based psychotherapy) allows the client to seek meaning, clarity, and healing. It deepens and transcends traditional talk therapy by acknowledging that each client’s process is unique. The accessibility of creative arts therapies is due to the focus being not on artistic outcomes but rather on the process of creating. A client of creative arts therapy is not required to have any artistic ability. Rather, it is through the use of the client’s senses that the imagination can process, flourish, break-way to, and support healing. At the Center for Creative Arts Therapy we use all modalities (art therapy, music therapy, dance/movement therapy, and drama therapy) to facilitate healing and growth.

Q: I’m a bit uncertain about coming in for counseling. Can you help me with this issue?

A: First of all, congratulations on the courage it takes to recognize that you may be in need of help or support. Being able to reach out is a critical life skill, and I commend you on that. Considering therapy can be scary and we encourage you to call and find out more about our practice. We welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have and let you get a feel for who we are and how we work.

Q: What happens?

A: In the first few sessions, we discuss the issues that made you decide to seek counseling and generally become acquainted. The single most important factor in the success of therapy is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the client, and we always recommend that our clients use the first few sessions to make sure they feel their therapist is a good fit for them. We will use multiple creative arts therapy modalities in order to facilitate the therapeutic relationship and explore difficult feelings and events.

Q: Will counseling really help me?

A: Many of our clients report that they begin to feel better within a few sessions and gain insights and coping strategies that last a lifetime. Through creative arts therapy and compassionate counseling, we are able to help guide others towards a strong sense of self and confidence.

Q: Do you have evening or weekend hours?

A: Yes, we have day, late afternoon, evening, and weekend appointments available, including Saturdays.

Q: I’m concerned about the cost. Do you take insurance?

A: We are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO. For BCBS, we will file a claim for you and you will pay your copay at the time of your visit. If you have other insurance, it is likely that you have some out-of-network benefits available, and we invite you to call your insurance company about that. You will need to pay in full at the time of your session and submit receipts for reimbursement by your insurance company.

We are happy to provide you with a detailed receipt to help you seek reimbursement from your insurance company. You may want to call them to ask if your plan has “out-of-network mental health benefits” and get details about your benefits. In addition, you must qualify for a mental health diagnosis in order to have insurance reimburse you for treatment. Insurance generally does not cover relationship/marriage counseling. If this arrangement does not work for you, we are happy to help you find another provider who is on your insurance provider panel.
